Al Pacino says he chose not to try to meet with Phil Spector before playing the legendary record producer in the HBO film “Spector,” which premieres in February. The film, written by David Mamet, dramatizes Spector’s trials and ultimate conviction for murder. It focuses on his relationship with Linda Kenney Baden (Helen Mirren), the attorney who defended him. Even if Spector had agreed to meet with him, said Pacino, “It would have been meeting a different person. Now he’s been convicted and he’s in prison. I play him before his first trial.”
